The Moomba Festival has once again showcased some of the country's emerging action sports stars. This year, over 260 participants took part in the five-day competition, which included skateboarding, roller skate, inline, scoot and BMX. The event drew in a crowd of 500,000 people who watched the mix of action sports.
The Australian Skateboarding League's Victorian Street Championships took place during the festival at Riverslide Skatepark. The competition saw young talent dominating the Open's division, with Hamed Anvari taking home the Men’s title and Fano Connor and Jack Lewis making it onto the podium for the first time. In the Women's Open competition, Chloe Covell was once again crowned champ. A strong showing from Felicity Turner and Ella Ledingham showed that women's skateboarding in Australia is in good hands. All competitors will now look to future events to hopefully represent Australia at Paris 2024.
For the first time ever, competitions were held for roller skate and inline with an energetic and enthusiastic vibe from new competitors ready to grow these disciplines over the next few years.
Aside from the competition, the Moomba Festival also raised over $3,000 in donations, with proceeds split between Riverslide and the Y's charitable work. The Tech Deck tent was also a popular attraction, with over 800 participants and 600+ Tech Decks given away.
The event was a huge success, which was bigger and better than ever with an extra day of celebrations. The Riverslide Skate Park was transformed into a space for trying new tricks and lit up Alexandra Gardens with exciting competitions each night.
Thank you to the amazing team at Skate Australia, Victorian Skateboarding Association, City of Melbourne, and generous sponsors Tech Deck and Vans Australia, Chuffed Skates, Brunny Hardcore, Bayside Blades, The Few Studio, Skull Candy Oz, Grit Scooters, Scooter Village, and Wheels and Motion.
Congratulations to all the place getters across all divisions.
